REPORT – Umpires and Scorers Course in Aldershot

Dec 12, 2022

UKAFCO Scorers Course

The first ever UKAFCO scorers course was held from 26th to 28th October 2022. This was also the first combined umpires and scorers course.

There were eight students – seven military personnel and one civilian. The course was held at Aldershot pavilion.  The tutors were Linda Judd and Mike Cornwell.  We were also joined by Andy Scarlett who was there to accredit the tutors.

Prior to the course the students were asked to complete the Basic scorers course so they arrived with some knowledge.  There were some experienced scorers and some novices. We paired them up so that the more experienced scorers could assist the others.

Also included were sessions about Play-Cricket, PCSPro, WTU, scorer attributes and etiquette, and the scorer pathway. The Officials Education team timed breaks so that the scorers and umpires could meet. Additionally, part of the final day allowed for practical scenarios to be played out with umpires signalling from the field and the scorers acknowledging and then advising the tutors on what the scorers would have recorded.

I look forward to seeing the scorers in the box during the 2023 season.

The next course will be held 19th to 21st April 2023.

UKAFCO Umpires Course

The latest UKAFCO Stage 2 Umpire’s Course was held from 24th to 28th October 2022. For the first time students had to complete the Stage 1 on-line Course as a pre-requisite to attend.

The first day was spent revising material learnt on the Stage 1 Course and a test was carried out to ascertain the understanding of the laws by the students.   Days 2-4 were spent undertaking the Stage 2 syllabus with Day 5 a practical day putting into practice what had been learnt.   From the Wednesday to the Friday the student umpires were joined by students undertaking a scorer’s course.  This was also the first combined umpires and scorers course held and it was a great success with umpires and scorers coming together at break times and undertaking Day 5 together.

There were 11 students all military personnel and as usual the course was held at Aldershot pavilion with the umpire’s course taking place in the upper level and the scorer’s course in the lower level.  The tutors were Glenn Duggan, Ben Hood and Christian Nicholson.

The next course will be held 17th to 21st April 2023 at the same venue and this course will definitely be held.   A further course is planned for October 2023, but the ECB ACO is undergoing major changes in the way that the training of umpires takes place, and we are awaiting details of what that might be and whether a 5 day course will take place or not.
