The Army Development XI Men’s Cricket team is the first cricket team from across the UK Armed Forces to undertake an OSV anywhere in the UAE.  I was selected by the United Kingdom Armed Forces Association of Cricket Officials (UKAF ACO) to officiate in the OSV and play nine games over five days. The standard of the pitches, the opposition, and the level of hospitality was simply supreme.

Game Day 1: Sharjah International Cricket Stadium
Game Day 1 saw the team play against the Emirates Cricket Board Blues in the city of Sharjah, at the famous Sharjah International Cricket Stadium, which holds the Guinness World Record for most ODI matches. Stepping onto the Sharjah Cricket Stadium turf felt like walking into a living museum of cricket. The echoes of legendary matches and the roars of past crowds lingered in the air, making this ground a place where cricket history has been written. Umpiring here was an honour, allowing me to become a small part of that narrative.

Game Day 2: Sevens Cricket Stadium
Game Day 2 saw the team play the Sports Journey Select XI at the Sevens Cricket Stadium. The stadium’s lighting was excellent, crucial for an umpire’s accuracy. The facilities were impeccably maintained, ensuring optimal conditions for both players and officials. This was my first time umpiring under the lights at night, which was both exciting and challenging, umpiring under the lights at the Sevens Cricket Stadium was a unique challenge. The vibrant atmosphere and the pressure of making accurate decisions in such conditions tested my skills and resilience.

Game Day 3: Kawran International Cricket Ground
Game Day 3 saw the team play the Desert Vipers Development XI at the Kawran International Cricket Ground in the city of Ajman. These players were a mixture of professional and former international cricketers. Umpiring this game boosted my confidence, knowing that I was officiating among such skilled players.

Game Days 4 and 5: Sevens Cricket Stadium
Game Days 4 and 5 saw the team play against the Wanderers XI and UAE U19s at the Sevens Cricket Stadium. The stadium has hosted numerous games, ensuring the playing surface is always of high quality, which helps an umpire make accurate decisions.

The Umpire’s Perspective
As an umpire, you’re constantly aware of the scrutiny. Every decision is magnified in a venue like this. Maintaining composure and accuracy is paramount. The heat can be a factor, demanding physical and mental stamina. But the thrill of being in the middle, overseeing a contest in such a historic setting, far outweighs any discomfort. To be at the centre of the action, to witness the drama unfold from such a close perspective, is an experience I’ll never forget. It’s a privilege to umpire at grounds that hold such a special place in cricket’s heart.
